Whale of a good time!
After leaving Puerto Los Cabos on Friday I motorsailed up to Los Frailes anchorage and spent the night. As I was underway I saw lots of whale spouts and some of the jumping and splashig at a distance. It's been great to see since I very rarey spot them in CA.
The next morning I made a long slog (amost 50 miles) up to Ensenada de los Muertos. The day started rolly as I left the anchorage but I was treated to a whale silouette jumping against the sunrise looking like that pacific life insurance commercial. The first half of the day was an ass kicking 15-20 kts of wind on the nose with whitecaps and wind waves short and steep hiding some larger swells that buried the bow and covered the boat in salt. I was glad the boat came standard with windshield wipers.... The last portion of the 8 hour leg was quite a bit calmer and getting into the anchorage and setting the hook was no problem. The next morning I decided to stay put one more night and enjoy the location for the day and go ashore to the restaurant and try it out. I had a nice paddle board and swam off the boat to keep cool during a very toasty day.
In the late afternoon I heard a couple of spouting breath sounds and looked out the back of the boat to see a whale calf just 50 yards or so from the stern. I took pictures and watched for almost an hour as it and it's mother periodically surfaced right in the anchorage in about 25 feet of water. Totally amazing.
After the whale show I took my paddle board into shore and enjoyed a great dinner of shrimp fajitas on the beach. It ended up not being cheap, but it was amazing.
Today I had planned to only go about 15 miles and stop so I could get up early and go through the Cerralva and San Lorenzo channels. They can have wind and swells amplified by the narrow passes. But as I got to my planned destination it was so nice and calm I decided to go the next 5-6 hours while it was flat and calm to my next planned anchorage. I arrived at Puerto Ballandra and got anchored right about 3:15 today and I am just about 4-5 miles from the entrance to La Paz harbor. There are several little coves between here and there. There are some events for Carnaval in La Paz from Feb 8-13 so I plan to go inside the harbor for part of that time. If the weather is nice I may stay here a couple days or I may go in tomorrow to La Paz. It's sort of nice having no deadlines or committments to meet. Makes planning easy!
Love it! I am living vicariously through your pictures and adventures 🤎
