Happy New Year!!
Being anchored here in Cabo San Lucas is amazing! The weather has been unbeatable so far. Low 80's with sun all day. Water temp 76 feeling refreshing, but certainly not cold.
The marina itself is pretty chaotic. I can't imagine maneuvering my boat in there so I'm glad to be anchored in the huge arc of sandy beach. I was initially trying to get in close to the marina entrance breakwater when I arrived, but it was pretty tight with other boats already anchored there. As it turns out, being over on the other side of the harbor is a benefit to be a little bit away from the constant parade of pangas and tour boats coming in and out. I think at least 70% of the wave/swell action is from the various vessel wakes constantly getting churned up. With whale watching, sea doo rentals, glass bottom boats, private yacht charters, parasailing, ultralight air tours it is a non-stop carnival every day. I went ashore to look around on Thursday and went to dinner at Baja Brewing. the beer and food were pretty good, but the view from the 7th floor rooftop restaurant was amazing! Although, it was a challenge to find. My map application kept telling me I was at my destination when I was at a blank brick wall next to a hotel. I didn't realize it was on the roof until after asking directions from several folks. The view was definitely worth the effort!
New Year's Eve didn't disapoint at all! There were fireworks and a drone light show on the beach from several of the resorts. I went ashore to walk around for a couple hours and had dinner at WTF Burger right by the dinghy dock. It was a pretty good burger and a nice change from cooking myself. I went back out to my boat just before dark and got the dinghy stowed as darkness fell. Then I read (and napped..) until midnight when the show started.
This has been a great stop and a great orientation to what's available here. Right off the dinghy dock there is a huge Chadrouy (sp?) supermarket, a Wallmart, and there is also a Costco in town. Re-provisioning would be really simple here. I almost wish I needed to get some stuff but I'm good for another week or 2 and will be at Purto Los Cabos in San Jose Del Cabo in a slip by then so I'll put it off. Procrastination is my superpower.
The paddle boarding is great in the morning before it gets too stirred up with the various boats running around. Going into the dinghy dock to go ashore is really easy and very worth the $3 per day charge. I keep thinking I might swim ashore on the less populated side where I'm anchored and go for a walk on the beach for a couple miles but haven't actually done it yet.
A couple on a Lagoon catamaran that left Ensenada the same time I did was also anchored here and had done some fishing on the way down. They were kind enough to share a couple chunks of the 40 lb yellowtail tuna they caught. Seared Ahi on the grill for dinner was pretty amazing!
I'm looking forward to the next stop later in the week. Then I have to start figuring out where to go next! Up to La Paz or down and across to Puerta Vallarta.... decisions, decisions....
Happy New Year! Steve says you should go to La Paz and continue into the gulf of California. He heard the cruising is excellent but very remote and also to PV. Sounds like a great trip! Take care and bon voyage! Aloha! Christine & Steve
Cheers to you Steve. Happy belated BDay. Was hoping to catch you in Ensenada last week but you were already gone and we could not dock because of the winds. Call me when you have a chance
