Plan C it is

Well, it was a day of highs and lows, not necessarily in that order. The low was clearly the engine not starting on my motor sailor, rendering me just a sailor. From a windy, beam swell morning, to a low wind mid morning, to a beautiful downwind sail this afternoon, I was able to sail directly into the Turtle Bay and sail to a good anchoring spot. As luck, or cruising in general, would have it. There is a guy here on his boat who is pretty expert in diesel engines and is going to help me troubleshoot my issue so I can get started on resolving it. There is a little town here with grocery store, restaurants, and a few others. I look forward to going ashore to see what is what. I was planning on staying until Saturday regardless , so at this point I'm right where I planned to be today. I made my first post on the Sea of Cortez Cruisers group page on Facebook this morning asking if anyone knew of a mechanic here at turtle bay. I received several instant responses for both mechanics and troubleshooting tips to try on my own. I think I ruled out fuel, battery, gearshift cut of switch. I think the solenoid is OK but it is either one of those or a sneaky power cable or battery problem. Troubleshooting is about to commence. I did not appreciate it at the time, but having gotten through the day and arrived where I wanted to be under sail power alone is a great feeling. On this boat I've always been a MOTORsailer. Without the motor I experimented much more with different wind conditions and tried things I've never done on the boat. I ran dead downwind after rigging a preventer to the midship cleat, I managed to run wing on wing coming into the harbor, furled the main as I drifted into an anchorage spot and managed to get the anchor set all without the engine. The failure to start was a serious blow to my, previously unshakable, confidence in the boat. But the sailing techniques and stuff I got to do really improved my confidence in myself and the boat to go farther with less engine. I'll let you know what the trouble shooting reveals! For now I'm anchored safe and sound, looking forward to a good night of uninterrupted sleep!
